Nineteen
of the 80 SOLEC (State of the Lakes Ecosystem Conference) indicators
mention persistent toxics. When measuring contaminants in something,
one is typically using levels in that organism as the indicator;
most contaminant measurements don’t relate back to an impact
on the system. That linkage is needed. So we are focusing on
indicators that can be linked to a biological endpoint. We also
want to get beyond PCBs and DDT deriviatives, and look at other
chemicals that are a problem in the Great Lakes.
