Measuring UV radiation

Studying Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Photoactivated toxicity of PAHs occurs when animals that contain PAHs within their bodies are exposed to ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

At each study site, researchers measure the amount of ultraviolet radiation penetrating the water. UV readings are taken at multiple depths as the sensor array is slowly lowered through the water.

The amount of ultraviolet radiation penetrating the water changes from site to site due to differences in water clarity, the presence and amount of algae, and water color.
