Brown Bullhead (Ameiurus nebulosus)

Environmental Estrogen Methods

Brown bullheads are in the catfish family (notice the chin "whiskers" known as barbels) and are commonly found in coastal wetlands throughout the Great Lakes. We are measuring vitellogenin levels in male brown bullheads (Ameiurus nebulosus); the presence of vitellogenin in male fish indicates exposure to environmental estrogens. When vitellogenin is detected, we then begin the search for the responsible chemicals in the water and in the bottom sediment.
